“We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like free men. We could'a been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the Lords of all Creation.”...“You could argue he'd done it to curry favor with the guards. Or maybe make a few friends among us cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again...if only for a short while.”

“I have no idea to this day what them two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid.I like to think they were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it.”...“I tell you, those voices soared. Higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away...and for the briefest of moments -- every last man at Shawshank felt free.” “There are things in this world not carved out of gray stone. That there's a small place inside of us they can never lock away, and that place is called hope.”

1.Red: Let me tell you something my friend: Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
2.Red narrating: These walls are kind of funny like that. First you hate em, then you get used to em. Enough time passes, so you depend on them.
3.Red narrating: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid.I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful,it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it.I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a great place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.
4.(On playing opera records in the prison)
Andy Dufresne: Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don‘t forget. Forget that there are places in the world that aren’t made out of stone. That there’s a---there’s a---there’s something inside that’s yours, that they can’t touch.
5.Andy Dufresne: That’s the beauty of music. They can’t take that away from you.
6.Red reading a note left by Andy: Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
7.Red narrating: We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like freemen. we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy—-he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face.watching us drink his beer.
8.Red narrating: You could argue he’d done it to curry favor with the guards. Or, maybe make a few friends among us cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again, if only for a short while.
9.Red narrating: I have to remind myself that some birds don’t mean to be caged . Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up. DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.
10.Red narraing: I hope I can make it across the border, I hope the Pacific is as blue as I dreamed it is; I hope to see my friend again, and shake his hand; I hope.
11.Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.
12.It takes a strong man to save himself, and a great man to save another.
      13.  I guess it comes down to a simple choice:get busy living or get busy dying.
