This summer Iparticipated in a three day class in Atlanta called Generation Next. During ourtime together, we learned about the principles Dale Carnegie wrote about in hisbooks, How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to StopWorrying and Start Living. After these three days, I’ve gained a betterunderstanding of how to interact with my community, how to manage stress, andof what I am capable of.

One of the very firstthings we did in this class was creating our visions for the next three to sixmonths. Then, every time we covered a new topic, we were encouraged to thinkabout one specific change we wanted to make, what principles we would use toget there, and how it would impact our visions. This helped give me direction, and allowed me to understand what it is that I want, what’s preventing me fromgetting there, and how I can fix it.

From there, we jumpedright in. We talked about each human relations principle, and got the chance topractice these skills and share stories from our own lives. We did so in funand exciting ways, and we were encouraged to be loud and expressive. Thisincreased our confidence, taught us how to build stronger relationships, andtaught us how to handle conflicts and disagreements properly.

In addition to improvingour people skills and confidence, another aim of the class was to help usmanage our stress better. With so much on our plates, it’s easy to findourselves juggling ten things at once while thinking about another five. Ourcoach gave us several tips on how to relax more and manage our time. I’velearned how to worry less and how to prioritize my tasks to avoid becomingoverwhelmed.

I’m typically a quietperson who likes to avoid being the center of attention, but this class helpedme feel more free and comfortable with putting myself out there. My coach andclassmates were a group of vibrant personalities, all working on the sameskills and sharing personal experiences. This helped us connect more and feelmore at ease together. Once one person felt comfortable going for it, the restof the group was able to let loose as well. By the end of the first day, I nolonger feared looking silly or being judged by the group. In such a short spanof time, I felt comfortable around everyone and was ready for whatever next.

Finally, we ended withour graduation ceremony. Every student had the opportunity to share theirbiggest takeaway from the course, and I’ll share mine again. My biggesttakeaway was how to communicate clearly, effectively, and with confidence.Speaking has always been difficult for me, but after only three days, I feelmuch better about interacting with the world around me.

Sincere thanks to the North America Volunteers for organizing the Carnegie Youth Training and providing thescholarship! This is a very valuable learning opportunity for me.
